I have avoided paying the fee to gain access to the site because the discussion board is free! I have perused through the posts and information in the archives and it looks as though this board is not as lively as I would have thought. There are a lot of one time posts that are more for information purposes or resource sharing rather than collaboration. I will try and post in regards to assessment because that is my biggest interest and concern at the moment and hopefully it will generate some discussion. However, it is the summer so I am not sure how many people would like to collaborate at a time of rest and relaxation!

Here is our project :)
https://prezi.com/view/b18GAoHtXDWaPEegsmOX/ Feedback is always appreciated! Thank you! After listening to the TED talk with Sugata Mitra and reading “An Integrated Approach to Developing and Implementing Learning-centered Curricula” (Hubball & Burt, 2004), I am further encouraged to seek out collaborative relationships with out-of-school colleagues, who fully buy-in to our new student-learning-centered curriculum. Since we are going through this curriculum change, we all find ourselves in the same situation. Although the curriculum change has been outlined, a lot of the planning, implementation and assessment strategies have been left up to the teachers and it is through this trial and error, that the curriculum is being revised, improved upon and updated.
One of the key ideas that I got from the reading was that collaboration is a key component for change. Collaboration between educators and between educators and students. Another key component for change, is the process of evaluation; not in the context of student assessment but rather in the assessment of what is working and what is not in the curriculum, how it is delivered and how it is adjusted. The TED talk reinforced the idea of the teacher as a facilitator. Mitra emphasized that students could learn what they wanted to learn as long as there was access. Their interests drove them to delve deeper in certain subject matter and/or take them into peer-mentorship roles. He also, through his “grandmother method” theory, emphasizes the need for encouragement and learning support from a teacher or mentor. The key ideas from these two sources are going to guide my research into posts in my chosen forum(s). I would like to know how other teachers are taking a step back and relinquishing control, for the sake of a more enriched and meaningful learning experience for both their students and themselves. Hubbell, B., & Burt, H. (2004). An Integrated Approach to Developing and Implementing Learning-centered Curricula. International Journal for Academic Development, (9)1, pp.51-65. Mitra, Sugata: The child-driven education http://www.ted.com/talks/sugata_mitra_the_child_driven_education.html Currently I teach in two different departments: math and international languages as a Spanish teacher. Every year we have one professional development in day in October that is designated towards our PSAs and every year I have attended the International Languages conference because it is the bulk of my teaching load. I have not become a member of the associations but thought that I would explore that idea for this module. Thus far, access to these associations is two fold. First, you can request to be part of the email blasts, which involves bulletins informing recipients of the opportunities in both their district and provincially. Second, members have to pay to be a member and that is where the real professional development begins. Once you become a member, you have access to blogs, discussion forums, lesson planning etc. Clearly the second would be more beneficial, however, this will cost me $40 per association which surprises me. I will look into more informal, FREE, avenues to collaborate with my district/provincial colleagues, but feel as though my hands are bit tied.
I am excited to share our group project! Denise and I worked together on the visual representation of curriculum philosophy, conceptions and design, and have presented our understanding of how they are linked in a prezi. Please enjoy and we welcome any feedback and comments!
http://prezi.com/-xfk0srnbmq0/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy I really hope this works this time! I created a Prezi to show how I perceive the conceptions and their connections.
